Keep at least three copies of important files, on two different storage types, with one copy offsite or otherwise isolated. A practical setup is the working copy, an encrypted local backup drive, and a reputable cloud backup. Keep the backup drive disconnected when it is not actively backing up so ransomware cannot easily reach it.
